How to use this list

Dandeli packs river adventure, forest adventure and wildlife into one compact trip, which is why it works so well as a weekend getaway. This guide covers twelve things worth doing, roughly in the order most visitors try them.

Prices below are what we charge at the time of writing and can change, so confirm when you book. Many of these activities are bundled into our adventure packages, which usually works out better than paying for each one separately.

1. White-water rafting on the Kali River

The headline activity, and the reason most people come. You board an inflatable raft with your group and a certified guide, paddle on command and ride through waves, drops and calm pools with Western Ghats forest on both banks. It is genuine white-water — Class II–III rapids — but guided and well supported, so no experience is needed.

Choose the 1 km Short Rafting route (about 40 minutes, from ₹700, beginner-friendly), the 5 km Mid Rafting route (about 1.5 hours, from ₹1,350) or the 11 km Long Rafting route (about 3 hours, from ₹1,750). Life jackets, helmets and paddles are provided. Read the full first-timer's rafting guide or see the rafting page.

2. River kayaking

Kayaking is the calmer, more personal way to experience the river. You paddle at your own pace along quiet stretches with the forest right at the water's edge, and there is time to look around, spot birds and simply float. It suits beginners, couples and anyone who wants to enjoy the scenery without the rapids' intensity (from ₹300).

Because it is self-paced, it is also a good way to warm up before rafting or to wind down after it. Go in the morning or late afternoon for the best light.

3. River boating and swimming

For families and groups who want the river without the adrenaline, there is river boating (from ₹100), river swimming (from ₹150) and the river jacuzzi (from ₹150), where the current tumbles around natural rocks and you sit in the flow like a natural spa.

These are easy, low-pressure activities that even young children and older travellers can enjoy. Life jackets are provided for swimming, and staff are on hand at all times.

4. Water zorbing

Roll around inside a giant transparent ball on the water. It is silly, splashy and a favourite with kids and groups, and it is one of the activities people talk about longest afterwards because everyone ends up laughing (from ₹300).

It is also a great icebreaker for corporate outings and school groups, since there is no skill involved — only a willingness to get wet and look a little ridiculous.

5. River zipline and classic zipline

Glide across the river or through the tree line on a zipline (from ₹300–₹350). It is short, thrilling and suitable for most first-timers: you are harnessed, clipped in and sent off by trained staff, and the ride itself is over in seconds.

The river zipline adds the satisfaction of flying over water, while the forest zipline gives you a bird's-eye view of the canopy.

6. Roller-coaster zipline

If the standard zipline is not enough, the 480 m roller-coaster zipline (from ₹1,400) adds speed, length and a proper adrenaline hit. It is the longest and most dramatic ride on offer and a good choice for thrill-seekers who have already done the basics.

7. Giant swing and sky cycling

Two heart-in-mouth options high above the ground. The giant swing (from ₹400) launches you in a wide arc over the forest, and sky cycling (from ₹400) has you pedalling along a cable high off the ground. Both are more about nerve than skill.

They are popular with teens and young adults, and make for great photographs and videos — just make sure any phone is secured before you go.

8. Canopy walk

Walk among the treetops on a suspended canopy path (from ₹600) for a bird's-eye view of the forest without the adrenaline spike. It is a gentler way to experience height, and a good pick for families, older travellers and anyone who would rather look at the forest than fly through it.

9. Trekking and nature trails

Guided forest treks (from ₹250) and longer nature trails are a great morning activity, when the air is cool and the forest is loud with birds. Your guide will point out plants, tracks, insects and sounds you would otherwise walk straight past.

Wear proper shoes, carry water and stay with your guide. Trails can be slippery after rain, so ask about conditions before you set out.

10. Bird watching

Dandeli's forests and river banks are home to a wide variety of birds, and early morning is when they are most active. Bring binoculars, or use ours (from ₹650), and go slowly — the reward comes from patience.

Hornbills are a highlight for many visitors. Read more in our wildlife and jungle safari guide.

11. Jungle safari

A guided drive through the forest in search of wildlife (from ₹800). Sightings are never guaranteed, but the landscape alone is worth the trip, and a good guide will make the drive interesting even when the animals stay hidden. Go early or late in the day for the best chances.

12. Camping and campfire nights

Finish the day around a campfire (from ₹150) or spend the night in a riverside or jungle camp (from ₹1,800) or a resort stay. Evenings in the forest are cool and quiet, and a campfire with friends is often the part of the trip people remember most.

Our camping guide covers what to expect, what is included and what to pack.
